Resilience di Colomba Bianca

Mattia Filippi signs Colomba Bianca's Resilience

Created to valorize the historical varieties of the Sicilian oenological tradition, the Resilience line originates from the concept of resilience in the vineyard, where the autochthonous Perricone and Lucido (better known as Catarratto), in particular, are the protagonists of a specific recovery and valorization project by Colomba Bianca: the 'Vigne Vecchie' project. In this context, the winery focuses on the preservation of a number of historical vineyards of medium-high age (up to fifty years), in which the vines have undergone an important process of adaptation to their habitat.
The result is small productions, but with excellent quality potential. The indigenous Lucido, Grillo, Insolia, Nero D'Avola and Perricone varieties, in particular, have given rise to fresh, lively wines that are a faithful and authentic expression of the main varieties of Sicily's ampelographic heritage.

Adua Villa interviews Mattia Filippi e Umberto Marchiori

What lies behind the quality of a wine?

La Vita In un Sughero  publishes Adua Villa's interview with our Mattia and Umberto.

la vita in un sughero
The value of the time factor in wine production and the importance of cork closure to ensure a product that lasts. Being aware of the variables that come into play in the production process, managing them and outlining valuable oenological projects. These were the concepts behind Adua Villa's interview with Umberto Marchiori and Mattia Filippi.
Time as an essential value for generating the quality of food products in general and wine in particular. "At one time," Umberto explains, 'in oenology we relied much more on the seasonality of processes. Today we have to recover time as a value. All the most important wines in the world are credible thanks to their longevity, their ability to improve their characteristics over time'.
"The high-quality natural cork stopper," says Mattia Filippi, "contributes to the positive evolution of wines that are able to mature over time.

Azienda Agricola Conte Collalto S.A.R.L.

Conte Collalto awarded at the International Wine and Spirit Competition

The 2021 edition of the International Wine and Spirit Competition (IWSC) awarded 3,460 wines, of which only 148 deserved a gold medal.
Italy saw seven winning sparkling wines: a Franciacorta, a Brut 2014 by Lo Sparviere and, surprisingly, a Concerto Lambrusco Dry 2020 by Medici Ermete. There were four Prosecco bottlings: 2019, Duca di Dolle Società Agricola, 100% Extra Dry; Tenuta di Collalbrigo, Non Vintage, Extra Dry NV; Conte Collalto, Octavian Sui Leviticus Zero Dosage Brut Naturale and Collalto's San Salvatore Brut Millesimato Prosecco DOCG 2020. Great satisfaction for Uva Sapiens for the important awards to Conte Collalto.

Planococcus ficus

Vine mealybug: chemical protection and biocontrol in comparison

Vine mealybug: chemical protection and biocontrol in comparison

Italian vineyards have long been subject to damage caused by the grapevine mealybug, Planococcus ficus. This is a constantly growing threat, which is increasingly difficult to deal with as the range of insecticides has been progressively reduced in recent years. For organic viticulture, the problem becomes even more pressing because control tools are limited.
In this phytoiatric panorama, the use of antagonistic insects is emerging as an interesting biocontrol tool. For this reason, since 2018 we have undertaken experimental trials to test the effectiveness of these insects in comparison with chemical strategies, in a multi-year perspective.

Teroldego Rotaliano, how to improve the territorial identity of wine

"There is an increasing need for an oenology that knows how to interpret varieties and terroir, that knows how to understand and make the most of the natural characteristics of quality grapes, limiting as far as possible the additives that surrogate or supplement what the grapes naturally already possess.
Mattia Filippi, in the March 2021 issue of VVQ - Vigna, Vini & Qualità, illustrates the maceration techniques developed by Uva Sapiens to obtain red wines with an original organoleptic profile, capable of expressing the territorial and winery identity to the full. This method, applied to the Teroldego Rotaliano, yielded very interesting results.

vigneti in Sicilia

In Wine in Sicily Magazine the interview to Mattia Filippi

In Wine in Sicily Magazine the interview to Mattia Filippi

"Is there a more international place in the world than Sicily? Perhaps, but proving it would be arduous. The close succession of peoples, ethnic groups and conquerors over the last 4,000 years - those of which we can reasonably have traces - leaves little doubt as to the island's vocation for hospitality. Among its most illustrious guests, there is one that is so 'international'. It is Vitis vinifera, a plant that (it seems) from the Caucasus has spread, also via Sicily, throughout Western Europe and then, over the last three/four centuries, throughout the world. In fact, excluding Antarctica, we can say that the vine is present on all continents".
So opens Francesco Pensovecchio's interview with Mattia Filippi forWine in Sicily Magazine

Technical dialogue on Esca disease and control methods

Together with the Consorzio di Tutela del Conegliano Valdobbiadene Prosecco Docg, we have organized for THURSDAY 8 and FRIDAY 9 NOVEMBER 2018 the technical dialogue entitled "ESCA DISEASE: METHODS OF CONTROL".
The first day is dedicated to the knowledge of this trunk disease, which has been increasingly spreading in all European wine-growing territories in recent years. The second day is entirely devoted to practical experience on the prevention and control methods that are most effective today. We would like to emphasize that François Dal will be with us, bringing his many years of experience in the field of curetage.

We believe that curiosity and the desire to confront each other are fundamental tools for growth in our work. This is why we "walk" so many vineyards and taste so many wines from territories all over the world. As happened a few weeks ago in the wonderful experience we had at Château Kirwan, a historic winery in Margaux, France. Rodrigo Laytte, winemaker and technical manager, guided us in a roundup from 2017 to 1981.

GESTIRE IL MAL DELL’ESCA

Managing Esca disease: 5 years of curetage testing

Managing Esca disease: 5 years of curetage testing

Winegrowers aiming for high quality goals want to maintain optimal vineyard health for as long as possible, which is why the Esca disease is a concern. In recent years, wood diseases have become more persistent, both in Italy and abroad, and as a result, the work of wine growers has become increasingly difficult. This situation has led us to engage in the search for effective solutions to the problem. For six years now, we have been testing different techniques to try to control, or better manage, this phytopathy. In 2010, we got to know Fraçois Dal, a technician working for Sicavac in Sancerre, in the Loire Valley, who shared with us a series of experiences, observations and figures regarding the treatment of Esca disease using the technique he calls curetage.
The procedure involves diligent cleaning of the wood using a small chainsaw, paying particular attention to the complete removal of the decay that has formed inside the trunk, so as to restore the vine.
We first tested the operation on a small number of vines, and then tested the procedure using a scientific protocol in the vineyard. In Italy, to date, no experimental curetage work has been carried out and no scientifically supported numbers have been released. Therefore, starting in 2013, we have set up experimental trials that are still ongoing. Here we share the results of the first five years of observations.
The ultimate goal of curetage is to minimize the number of diseased plants to be replaced, as the young rooted cuttings have to grow together with the adult vines, a condition that hardly leads to uniformity of grape production and quality in the vineyard.
In the October 2018 issue of the magazine VVQ Vigne Vini & Qualità we presented the results of the 5-year trial we were engaged in with the aim of finding the best way to manage the Esca disease and especially to prevent it.
